Dr. Christopher W. Kerr is the Chief Medical Officer at The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, where he has worked since 1999.
His background in research has evolved from bench science towards the human experience of illness as witnessed from the bedside, specifically patients’ dreams and visions at the end of life. Although medically ignored, these near universal experiences often provide comfort and meaning as well as insight into the life led and the death anticipated.

FEN POLL ON DEMENTIA AND THE RIGHT TO DIE
Not surprisingly (at least, not to us), many Americans want the option to hasten
their death if faced with dementia.
The horror of dementia is that it will not only rob you of your life, eventually …
f
irst it will destroy your personality, your selfhood.
Dementia destroys the essence of who we are long before it kills us. Final Exit Network ran a nationwide poll asking people how they felt about two options for hastening death in the face of dementia.

LEAVING ON YOUR OWN TERMS

At age 94, Rosemary Bowen hastened her death by voluntarily stopping eating and drinking (VSED) in 2018.

For twenty years, Rosemary Bowen had told her family that she would hasten her death when she was no longer able to live independently. Several months after suffering a back injury, she decided that she was ready to die. Rosemary asked her daughter to make this video to show others that VSED could be a sensible end-of-life option.

We Support The Human Right To A Death With Dignity

We hold that mentally competent adults who suffer from a terminal illness, intractable physical pain, chronic or progressive physical disabilities, or who face loss of autonomy and selfhood through dementia, have a basic human right to choose to end their lives when they judge their quality of life to be unacceptable.
